We observe nowadays that there are hundreds of published works regarding physical health but there are only a few that focus on improving good mental health when in fact it should be given first priority. The brain function is affected by what we think by what we are feeling and by the way we are behaving. A person who has poor mental health would hardly think of improving one’s overall health when they are not even able to control their thoughts and emotions in order to live fulfilling lives.
People with good mental health can become optimistic despite the many challenges in life. They are resilient and can find a number of ways to make a negative situation work for them. Negative thinking can lead someone to depression that can become fatal. It can affect the way the bodily organs work. Depression increases stress and weakens the resolve of the individual affected. Some people go to the extremes of taking their own life.
What is mental health?
Mental health is how you feel about the way you are, the quality of relationships around you and the ability to manage problems and feelings. It is more than just being able to overcome depression, anxiety and other psychological issue but also the ability to avoid negative thinking.
People who have good mental health have a certain healthy degree of contentment that is not based purely on material wealth. They are able to remind themselves of the good things in life. People who have good mental health have something to look forward too. They have a purpose that is not limited to their religious view and cultural background and family issues.
Individuals who have good mental health have fairly good self-esteem without leading to vanity and can easily adapt to changes in the environment and people around them.

Being mentally and emotionally healthy does not simply mean overcoming the bad times and stress rather the ability to rise again after big challenges in one’s career, life and society. It is the ability to balance emotions and to still find something worth doing and loving despite of it all. It is the ability to control and decide where to focus once energy. It is the ability to have a goal despite traumatic events without becoming too robotic and monotonous.
